Kids Jiu-Jitsu Classes in Plainville, MA

Dark Side Jiu-Jitsu teaches Brazilian jiu-jitsu to kids and teens ages 4 and up in Plainville, Massachusetts, with families coming from North Attleborough, Wrentham, and Franklin. Classes run Monday through Thursday afternoons; the youngest group trains Saturday mornings.

Most kids walk in nervous. They warm up fast, because everyone in the room started the same way.

Three groups, split by age

Tiny Squids

Ages 4-6 · Saturday mornings

Safe movement, animal games, listening skills, and their first real moves, half an hour at a time. No punches, no kicks. Shy kids do fine here; the games do the introductions.

DJJ Kids

Ages 7-12 · Monday-Thursday, 4:00-5:00 p.m.

Real technique, live drilling, and the discipline of showing up. Four afternoons a week, so a missed Tuesday is not a missed week. Kids who want to compete can; plenty never do.

Pending Shane: confirm the age split (7-12 / 13-17 are placeholders)

Teens

Ages 13-17 · Monday-Thursday, 5:00-6:00 p.m.

Their own hour, right after the kids class, with training partners their own age. Same technique the adults learn, taught at their pace.

How belts get earned

Stripes and belts are earned on three things: showing up, learning the technique, and behaving on and off the mat. Nobody buys a belt here.

Kids move through the youth belt colors with stripes in between:

  1. 1. White
  2. 2. Grey
  3. 3. Yellow
  4. 4. Orange
  5. 5. Green

Who teaches your kid

Shane Brady has run Dark Side since 2018 and has 18 years on the mat. Classes stay small, so your kid actually gets coached.

“Shane and Chris immediately made us feel like family and they are so awesome with the kids. They build confidence and character, things you cannot find in this social media driven generation.”

Bring us the kid you have

The shy one

Nobody gets thrown to the wolves: partners are matched by size and age.

The one getting picked on

Jiu-jitsu is control, not hitting. Kids learn to handle someone bigger calmly, and the confidence carries off the mat.

The one who cannot sit still

An hour of real work, four afternoons a week. They leave tired and grinning.

The athlete

Grappling is balance and body position, not just strength.

Parent questions, straight answers

What age can kids start Brazilian jiu-jitsu at Dark Side?
Kids start at age 4. Tiny Squids covers ages 4 to 6 with movement games; DJJ Kids picks up at age 7 with real technique and live drilling.
Is BJJ safe for a 4-year-old?
Yes. Brazilian jiu-jitsu has no punches or kicks, and kids stop the moment a partner taps.
What is the difference between BJJ and karate for kids?
Karate is striking: punches, kicks, and forms. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is grappling: balance and technique to control someone bigger, with no hitting. Kids can train at full effort safely.
Does my kid need experience or gear to start?
No experience needed. Wear comfortable athletic clothes to the first class. Pending Shane: loaner gi for trials?
How do belt promotions work for kids?
Same three things you see in the belt section above: showing up, learning the technique, and behaving on and off the mat. Pending Shane: belt details: Shane’s call, still deciding
Why is your logo an octopus?
There is a real jiu-jitsu position called octopus guard: limbs everywhere, grips that do not let go. World champions have built systems around it. For a jiu-jitsu gym, the logo fits.
What happens at my child’s first class?
Come 15 minutes early to sign in. A coach pairs your kid with a partner near their size and walks them through the warm-up. You can watch from the side the whole time.
What do classes cost?
Call or text (508) 333-4678 and ask. Straight answers, no hard sell. Pending Shane: pricing decision (publishing recommended)
Do I have to sign a contract to start?
You pick the term: monthly, 6 months, or 12 months, with a discount for the longer terms. You sign a waiver when you enroll.
